St. Augustine supposedly had a dream one night in which he was walking down the seashore. He came upon a little boy who was digging a hole in the sand. The hole was massive, and as the waves crashed on the shore, water rushed into it. Augustine marveled at this mysterious scene and hollered down to the boy who continued digging. “What are you doing?”, he asked. Without pausing his work, the boy replied, “I’m digging a hole for the ocean.” Augustine responded, “Silly boy, the ocean will never fit into that hole no matter how long you dig!” The boy dropped his shovel, looked up out of the hole, and stared at Augustine. He said, “Then why are you trying to fit God into your mind?” Who could resist this prophet?! Who could deny such truth?! Who could remain unhumbled by this experience?! Out of the mouths of babes! In the week ahead, let’s commit to climbing out of whatever spiritual hole we have dug for ourselves. Let’s experiment with our creatureliness. Let’s confront our pride and beg the Lord to break through our limited understanding. Like St. Augustine, we shall be overwhelmed by the grace of that moment and baptized by the tears of our conversion. Ave Crux, Spes Unica.
